SUMMARY:VSA General Meeting (March) - The Kathleen Syme Library and Communi
 ty Centre - 4 Mar 26 19:30
DESCRIPTION:In person and online zoom meeting.\nPresentation: Nigel Cooke\n
\n\nRadio Direction Finding (RDF)\n\nNigel will present an overview of the
RDF system invented by Peter Robertson. Peter and Daryl Carr produced a v
ideo some time ago detailing the operation and use of the RDF system. Exce
rpts from that video will be used and tied together with a Power Point pre
sentation to allow general discussion as the presentation proceeds.\n\nRDF
is useful in locating specific underground features to their correspondin
g surface location. This can lead to a better understanding of the cave sy
stem and potentially direct a focussed surface search to find new entrance
s or possible dig sites.\n\nThe RDF equipment designed and built by Peter
will be on hand for members to examine and get a hands-on perspective.\n

and there is enough interest\, we will drop into other caves in the Byaduk
reserve.\nHorizontal gear is required. Theatre will require a ladder clim

DESCRIPTION:Deb Hunter is inviting two more members to join herself\, Ian M

Canyon (Machinery Creek): A spectacular\, deep and large canyon facing no
rth to north-west\, ideal for days with long daylight hours. It is situate
d 45 minutes drive from Mole Creek and requires a car shuffle. One hour’
s walk each end and 8 pull-down pitches plus some scrambling. You should e
xpect up to 8 hours between cars. Tasmanian highland conditions can be col
d\, but if there is too much water our poor weather the trip will likely c
hange to caving at late notice.\n\nFriday 28 NovemberCroesus Cave bounce t
rip: some say it’s Mole Creek’s best limited access caving trip (max 6
people). This will be a bounce trip\, in and out again through the outflo
w entrance. This cave is always cold\, but excepting rare activation of fl
ood routes in heavy weather\, only carries a trickle of mineral saturated
seepage water. We are wading most of the trip. There are some deep pools.
We should expect to be 3-4 hours underground.\n\nOther trips can be facili
tated around this time if there is interest. Deb is happy to loan ropes an
d gear.\nContact Deb by email to debhunter26@gmail.com if you are interest

DESCRIPTION:The VSA navy is to be re-launched on the Melbourne Cup long-wee
kend 2025!\n\nWe are seeking expressions of interest for a multi-day kayak
ing trip down the Glenelg River in Western Victoria.\nThe plan is to paddl

the 4th of November.\n\nThis would be a very leisurely paddle\, with the m
ain goal being to explore as many of the caves along the river as possible
over 4-5 days.\nFor those who are interested\, but cannot do the whole we
ekend will have options to do a shorter trip\, but it is preferable that t
hose attending would stay for the entirety of the long weekend. Boats and
gear can be provided\, however anyone attending is welcome to bring their
own.\n\nNot convinced about your paddling ability? Tom Elms will be runnin

SUMMARY:Pyramids Exploration - Buchan - 3 Oct 25 08:00
DESCRIPTION:Tom Elms will be running a 3-day ‘expedition’ to the Pyrami

granted supervised 4WD vehicle access through their property to reach the
reserve. Vehicles will be parked at the Pyramids Reserve boundary with the
quarry property. Strictly no access is permitted beyond the designated ve
hicle route and parking area.\n\nThe trip will begin early on Friday morni

ere will not be opportunities for vehicles to come and go outside of the d
esignated arrival and departure times. There are several suitable camping
areas\, all located a short walk from where vehicles will be parked.\n\nTh
ere will be plenty of opportunities to explore other caves and features in
the area\, including some chances to rock climb. If anyone is interested
in any other specific activities in the area (survey\, walking\, specific
visits etc.) feel free to organise. Numbers are limited by 4WD availabilit

DESCRIPTION:Online general meeting and a meeting presentation.\n\n\nPresent
ation: “Moonmilk and its Microbes: Life in an Unlikely Place”\n\nPhil
Bottomley\n\nThis talk will introduce the microbial life within moonmilk -
a soft\, white\, and mysterious mineral deposit found in caves. Recent re
search has revealed that moonmilk harbours a surprising diversity of micro
organisms\, with some even contributing to its formation. Phil’s talk wi
ll explore current scientific literature on this enigmatic speleothem\, al
ong with some of the weird and wonderful microbes that call moonmilk home.
He will also discuss his own research investigating the ability of certai
n moonmilk microbes to metabolise atmospheric gases\, such as methane and
hydrogen\, and how this may influence cave ecosystems.\n\nPhil Bottomley i
s an Honours student at La Trobe University\, where he is currently resear
ching the microbial ecology of moonmilk\, a secondary mineral deposit foun
d in cave environments. His research project investigates the biogeochemis
try of moonmilk in Australian caves and the role that moonmilk microorgani
sms may play in oxidising atmospheric trace gases. An ecologist at heart\,
Phil is continually fascinated by the ability of microorganisms to shape
our biosphere - from the air we breathe to the unseen worlds beneath our f

SUMMARY:Introduction to SRT and Vertical Caves - Part 2 - Buchan - 26 Sep 2

DESCRIPTION:This is a stage TWO of the SRT learning trip.\n\n\n\nThe second
stage will happen this weekend it will be in vertical caves in Buchan. We
will have multiple cave riggers for that trip and the group will be split
into multiple caving parties. Each party will have their own guide/instru
ctor to help you learn SRT and safely commute on ropes in the caves.\n\n\n
\n\nThis trip is suitable for people with zero caving experience and for m

n: “Into the Depths: Exploring Microbial Life in Caves”\n\nNayeli Luis
\n\nThis 40-minute talk offers a behind-the-scenes look at the unique chal
lenges and discoveries involved in collecting biological samples from cave
environments to perform environmental microbiology studies. The presentat
ion will explore how microbiologists plan and conduct fieldwork in these s
ubterranean systems. From organizing equipment and sampling designs to con
ducting DNA analyses\, Nayeli will share her fieldwork experiences and exp
lain how these efforts help uncover the invisible yet vital microbial comm
unities thriving in caves. The talk will cover practical aspects of expedi
tion planning\, environmental measurements\, and (a little bit) the ecolog
ical significance of these microorganisms in hidden underground ecosystems
.\n\nM. Nayeli Luis-Vargas is a PhD candidate at La Trobe University\, whe
re she studies microbial ecology in extreme environments. Her research foc
uses on the biogeochemical roles of microbial communities in Australian ca
ves\, particularly how these microorganisms can impact surface systems. Pa
ssionate about both science and storytelling\, Nayeli enjoys sharing the f
ascinating world of cave microbiology with a broader audience.\n\n

SUMMARY:RIMSTONE Homeleigh working bee - Homeleigh - Buchan - 24 Nov 12 08:
 00
DESCRIPTION:Work will continue with the ongoing restoration of Homeleigh.\n
\nOf particular importance this working bee will involve some spring clea
ning. Some may be aware that Homeleigh suffered an invasion of rats over
the winter months and as such we need to focus our attention on bringing
the kitchen back to a hygienic standard. We need to scrub the walls from
ceiling to floor\, behind the stoves and fridges\, in the ovens and cupbo
ards and clean the ceiling fans. While in the cupboards we need to fix a
leaking tap under the kitchen sink. The usual spider web clean up inside
and out needs to take place.\n\nIf you have been to Homeleigh lately you
will notice our won-derful hedge is taking over the driveway and needs to
have a gentle trim! In order to simplify our yard maintenance it is inte
nded to remove a number of old boundary fence posts that have been long
abandoned. This will reduce the effort required to mow the grass. Speakin
g of mowing...we need to get into the bottom corners of the garden with o
ur newly modified and improved brushcutter and knock down the weeds and g
rass.\n\nThe plastering program is ongoing with works continuing in the p
assageways. Room 15 has been slowly transformed into a fine abode with so
me finishing touches required in the painting department.\n\nSo there is p
lenty of work for all skill levels. If you have not been to Homeleigh for
a while this is a great chance to come along and check out the amazing t
ransformation that is taking place. For those new on the Rimstone scene
you may be surprised at how social these working bee’s can be. It is a
great atmosphere to be able to pick the brains of some of those old time
cavers in a relaxed environment. You never know what you may learn! Of c
ourse the objective is to tick off a few jobs but there is no need to bus
t one’s boiler. If you haven’t been toa working bee for a while maybe
this is your chance to catch up on what you have missed out on!\n\nIf you
intend to join the working party could you please notify Paul Brooker (p
