Membership Types

The VSA currently has 5 types of membership; Introductory, Associate, Full, Life and Foundation. Prospective members are encouraged to take up an Introductory Membership which will allow them to explore their personal interests over a 12 month period (or until the current year’s AGM, whichever is earlier). Due to insurance purposes all memberships are 18+, unfortunately we cannot accept junior members.

The Introductory Membership is offered at an attractive discount which includes insurance as well as a monthly newsletter, the quarterly VSA magazine (Nargun) and the quarterly ASF magazine (Caves Australia). Recognised recreation groups are also encouraged to join VSA as they can become official affiliated groups of the VSA and participate in co-organised activities.

Of the 5 membership types, 3 are available for a prospective members. Life and Foundation are reserved for existing members.

Memberships Fees

The majority of the memberships fees include a VSA and ASF components. The Total is the amount to be paid upon joining and when renewing. Introductory Memberships can be paid anytime of year, the VSA financial year runs from May to April. Membership renewals requests are typically sent in June.

Introductory Membership Application Process

Complete form and email to introductory@caving.org.au, then transfer the membership fees to the bank account listed on the form.
Once your application is accepted and payment received you will typically receive a welcome email from the VSA Treasurer.

To maximise your membership we highly recommended that you have a beginner trip or activity lined up before paying your membership fee. The most common way introductory members join is when they see a beginner event on Facebook or the Website and reach out to the organiser.

Otherwise you can send the VSA Committee an email, details on the Contact page. From there we can answer any of your questions and/or put your name on a waiting list for the next beginner trip. You are also welcome to attend a VSA General Meeting, these are held on the first Wednesday of every month, except June and December (check the website calendar for dates and details). If you plan to come along let us know in advance.

After your first trip to stay engaged it is recommended that you keep an eye out for suitable trips and activities by Facebook and the Website. You may apply for Associate Membership during this period, but typically if you have been on 1 or 2 activities you will be offered to renew your membership after 12 months as an Associate Member.

Associate Membership Application Process

Be nominated by two Full Members who know the applicant and are familiar with their caving experience and abilities.
Upon approval by the Committee, Associate Membership is typically announced at the next general meeting.

This membership is similar to Introductory Membership gives you the right to nominate for Committee positions.

Full Membership Application Process and Eligibility

Have substantial caving experience, including multiple caves in different regions, gained over at least 12 months as an Introductory or Associate Member of VSA, or as a Full Member of another recognised speleological organisation, and have participated in VSA activities.
Be familiar with the ASF Code of Ethics and ASF Safety Guidelines: Code of Ethics, Cave Safety Guidelines
Demonstrate a responsible and safety-conscious approach to caving.
Competently use and maintain their personal equipment and possess a broad range of caving skills.

Additional Notes
(i) In exceptional circumstances, the VSA Committee may approve Full Membership for individuals who do not meet all the standard requirements.
(ii) As per Rule 3A(b) in the VSA Statement of Purposes and Rules, Full Membership must be approved by a majority vote of Full Members present at a general meeting.

Membership Explainer

The Victorian Speleological Association Inc. (VSA) has three main membership categories: Introductory, Associate, and Full Membership. Each tier exists for a different reason and reflects a member’s experience, commitment to the club, and level of responsibility within the organisation.

Introductory Membership

Introductory Membership is designed specifically for people who are completely new to the VSA and often new to caving itself. The main purpose of this tier is to make it easy and affordable for new people to get involved in the club. A large portion of the fee goes directly toward membership with the Australian Speleological Federation (ASF), which provides insurance coverage for caving activities. This means introductory members are insured to participate in appropriate VSA-run trips, including trips that require permits or ASF affiliation.

Introductory members:

Can attend VSA trips and activities
Are covered by ASF’s insurance
Can participate in training and gain experience
Cannot vote at meetings
Cannot lead trips

This category exists because caving carries inherent risks, and the VSA wants new members to spend time learning club culture, safety standards, conservation ethics, and cave skills before taking on more responsibilities. Introductory membership is intentionally temporary. It lasts for a maximum of 12 months. After that period, members automatically transition to Associate Membership when they renew. This automatic progression recognises that someone who has remained involved for a year has demonstrated ongoing interest and commitment to the club.

Associate Membership

Associate Membership is the standard ongoing membership category for most active club members. This tier exists to allow people to remain active participants in the VSA without requiring them to immediately take on the responsibilities associated with full membership and leadership.

Associate members:

Are full ASF members and remain insured
Can attend and participate in club trips
Can assist on trips and become highly experienced cavers
Cannot officially lead VSA trips

Associate Membership is effectively the “general membership” tier. Many members remain associates for years quite happily, particularly if they simply enjoy participating in trips and club activities without wanting involvement in governance or leadership. The automatic transition from Introductory to Associate Membership after 12 months exists because it prevents people remaining indefinitely in the discounted “new member” category and it recognises longer-term participation in the club.

Full Membership

Full Membership is the highest standard level of membership within the Victorian Speleological Association Inc. (VSA) and represents a trusted, established member of the organisation. This tier exists because the VSA is a member-run volunteer organisation that relies on experienced cavers to:

Vote on club decisions
Maintain standards and culture
Lead trips safely
Mentor newer members
Help manage access relationships and conservation responsibilities

Full members:

Have voting rights at general meetings and AGMs
Can nominate and vote on club matters
May become trip leaders
Have access to the VSA records database

To become a Full Member, an Associate Member must either nominate themselves or be nominated by another Full Member at a general meeting. Existing Full Members then vote on the nomination, with a simple majority required for approval. This process exists because Full Membership reflects trust and confidence from the existing membership base.

It ensures that people given voting rights and leadership responsibilities have demonstrated:

Safe and competent caving practices
Good judgement
Reliability
Understanding of VSA and ASF standards
Respect for cave conservation and access requirements
Ability to work well within the club community

Full members who wish to lead trips must additionally meet the requirements outlined in the VSA Leadership Policy. This ensures that leadership approval is based not only on popularity or time in the club, but also on demonstrated technical competence and risk management ability.

Life Membership

In addition to the 3 main membership categories, the Life Membership is the highest honour that can be awarded by the VSA. It is reserved for members who have made an exceptional and sustained contribution to the club and the broader caving community over many years. Life Membership exists to formally recognise individuals whose dedication, service, leadership, exploration, conservation work, mentoring, administrative contribution, or long-term commitment has had a significant positive impact on the VSA.

Life Members are typically individuals who have:

Made substantial long-term contributions to the club
Demonstrated outstanding commitment to caving, conservation, or club operations
Taken on significant leadership or organisational responsibilities
Contributed to cave exploration, documentation, rescue, training, or mentoring
Helped shape and support the culture and future of the VSA

Life Membership is not automatically granted based on length of membership alone. It is awarded only in exceptional circumstances through a formal decision of the club. Life Members retain the rights and privileges of Full Membership.
