VSA General (July),     02/07/2025,   7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

The Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre, 251 Faraday St, Carlton, VIC, 3053

The meeting will also be conducted via Zoom once again.

The topic for the meeting presentation:

David Salter will present “Lava Caves of the Stony Rises at Pomborneit”.

Synopsis : An amateur overview of historical and current explanations for the existence of the pyroducts, lava blisters and tectonic fissure caves produced by the lava flows of Mt. Porndon, along with details of discoveries made by the VSA and surveys carried out during recent field trips.

David is a development engineer in the plastics industry. His weekends are often spent in the Stony Rises that have been his adventure playground for sixty years. David’s journey to the VSA stemmed from a desire to learn how Mt. Porndon produced the caves we know of and how to read the landscape to find others.

Exploratory Caving and Tube Installation – Potholes,     20/06/2025 - 22/06/2025,   All Day

Buchan, 15 Gelantipy Rd, Buchan, VIC, 3885, East Gippsland

4 for 4! Our latest Potholes Dig Project has continued the trend—producing not just one, but two substantial, undescended pitches.

If you’d like to be among the first to see this brand-new cave, get in touch!

  • Friday’s plan is to install an entrance tube to ensure that neither wildlife nor tourists accidentally fall into our very impressively sized hole. At this stage, we believe there are two separate pitches forming the cave, and one of these may be dropped on Friday—plenty of motivation to join us and help with surface work.
  • Saturday will focus on descending one or both pitches and beginning exploration. Depending on what we find, we’ll continue on Sunday with either exploration or some gardening to make the pitches safer.

If you’re interested, reach out to Tom Aberdeen or Tom Elms.

SRT skills are required.

Dickson’s Caves and M4,     19/04/2025 - 20/04/2025,   8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Homeleigh, 15 Gelantipy Rd, Buchan, VIC, 3885

Tom Aberdeen is running a trip to Dickson’s Cave A&B and M4 Cave. This trip is intended for beginners and newcomers to the club. No experience is necessary. You will need either a wetsuit or 2 layers of polypropylene thermals, as M4 is a wet cave. A waterproof light is also highly recommended. Whether we cave on Sunday is yet to be confirmed, depending on who comes along. Email Tom at justcantstop@hotmail.com to reserve a spot. As this is on the long weekend, Homeleigh may be full, so confirming your place ASAP might be a good idea!

NG5 New Guinea Ridge,     12/04/2025 - 13/04/2025,   8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Homeleigh, 15 Gelantipy Rd, Buchan, VIC, 3885

Doug Henry will be leading a trip into NG5 on this weekend. It is open to all. Places will be first in best dressed.
NG5 is a streamway cave with water normally ankle deep. One end of the streamway is a large collapse chamber and the other gets too tight to make progress. The entrance is an easy vertical free climb, no SRT gear required. Only standard horizontal gear is required, no need for wetsuit or the like.
It is well decorated in most parts of the cave.
Let me know if you want to join the trip. nigel.cooke@bigpond.com

Northern Potholes Excavation/Dig Project,     11/04/2025,   8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Homeleigh, 15 Gelantipy Rd, Buchan, VIC, 3885

Parks Victoria has granted permission for the VSA to commence a new excavation project at the base of a large doline located in the northern part of the potholes reserve, Buchan.
The doline in question had no obvious leads and was covered with blackberry until a recent burn-off. Since heavy rain in February, a small opening has revealed itself that appears to continue down. There is a good chance that this doline shares a common drainage point with Fathers cave, the previous VSA dig project in Potholes.
Contact Tom Elms or Tom Aberdeen if interested

Mt Porndon exploration,     21/03/2025 - 23/03/2025,   6:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Mt. Porndon, TBA, Camperdown

More work to be done on Refuge Cave. David is also keen to explore some other local geological formations that may lead to further discoveries. So, exploration and survey will be on the plan.
The Arch Cave is planned for Friday after dinner. This timing is to allow a full exploration of the lava tube while minimising disturbance of the resident bats.
Saturday morning is a dig party in Refuge and Shinbone Caves, located walking distance from camp, along with investigation of another potential void nearby.
Saturday afternoon is exploration of a “new to science” shaft in the Mt. Porndon Ring Barrier and survey completion of the shaft explored on the Spring trip.
Sunday morning has Rubbish and One Dome Caves on the agenda for those needing more lava tube action, with a concurrent dig party aiming to reopen a nearby cave that was closed around a century ago according to local legend.
There is limited bunk room style accommodation, hot showers, barbeque facilities and a fully featured coffee machine.
Saturday night dinner will be provided and if history is any guide, all our dairy needs then some, will be supplied by a local organic dairy farmer.

M3 Shades of Death Survey,     15/03/2025 - 16/03/2025,   8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Homeleigh, 15 Gelantipy Rd, Buchan, VIC, 3885

Over this weekend I will run a trip to the back of the cave to continue the new survey.

The trip is closed. I have a full team for the survey this time around. Anyone wanting to go on the waiting list in case someone drops out can contact me via email.

Homeleigh, 15 Gelantipy Rd, Buchan, VIC, 3885

Tom Elms will be running a trip to explore some of the better known caves at Buchan. The objective is to provide an introductory experience for those members who have recently joined us or are about to join. As such, this trip is suitable for all levels of ability. Any more experienced member who is keen to get underground on a not so technical trip, is welcome to put their hand up as well but be aware that priority for places will go to newer members.
Tom will post further details in due course.

Presentation : Geology and Plant Life: plants of the Buchan Valley
Assoc. Prof. John Morgan
Assoc Professor John Morgan is a plant ecologist at the Department of Ecological, Plant and Animal Sciences, La Trobe University. He is interested in the factors that influence plant distributions – both historic and contemporary. Many think of climate as the key driver of distributions, but geology and soils also have a profound impact on plants, shaping where they grow and their adaptation to environment. This is particularly true for plants that grow on ‘rare’ geology – like serpentine. In this talk, John will focus on plants of the Buchan region – where limestone plays an important role in the distribution of plants, and explains the current rarity of some.
