The VSA were approached by David Salter recently, a landowner in the Camperdown area and volcanic cave enthusiast. He has a cave on his property, Refuge Cave, that has potential for extension with a bit of soil and rock relocation. There are several known lava caves in the area, including Arch Cave and One Dome Cave, residing in the lava flow from Mt. Porndon. In the same lava flow are other small openings that have the potential for being made suitable for entry and exploration. David is keen to investigate these features thoroughly and has invited VSA members to help with digging, exploring and surveying the area.

This trip aims to survey what is already known and push into as many cave leads as possible. It is mostly horizontal so it is suitable for members of all experience levels and particularly those with a lean toward discovery and exploration. Members wishing to experience cave survey in its natural habitat would also be most welcome.

Susan White will be leading the trip and I will be supporting with the underground work. You can contact either of us to discuss the trip in more detail if you are interested. Some on site accommodation is available but it is limited. Other options include camping and motel in Camperdown (10 minutes drive).
