Presentation :

Nayeli Luis – PhD Student

Cave Microbiology : The diverse communities of micro-organisms that form biofilms and contribute to forming secondary mineral deposits in caves.

In this presentation, Nayeli will explore the fascinating world of cave microbiology, focusing on the diverse communities of microorganisms that form biofilms and contribute to forming secondary mineral deposits. The discussion will explain how these microbes survive in environments with few nutrients and their essential roles in cave ecosystems. She will also introduce cutting-edge tools for studying these microbes, such as DNA sequencing and computer-based analysis. By the end of the talk, you will gain an understanding of how learning about microbial life in caves can help answer more significant questions about life on Earth and its processes.

Nayeli is a PhD student exploring the biogeochemical basis of microbes in Australian caves and their ecological interactions with surface environments. Nayeli completed her BSc. and MSc. degrees at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and then studied microorganism diversity in lava tubes. Since beginning her academic journey, she has been passionate about understanding life and its ecological processes in extreme environments, such as caves.
