Presentation by Dr Susan White OAM
The distribution and speleogenesis of the dune limestone karst in Australia.
Carbonate (limestone) dune are the host rock of more caves and karst than the elsewhere in the world. The limestone is very young compared to other areas of karst e.g. Buchan or Tasmania. This talk will outline the characteristics, distribution and the processes of formation of caves in this limestone around Australia, especially those in Victorian and SE SA, and will highlight its unusual characteristics.
Dr Susan White OAM, is a karst geomorphologist based at La Trobe University who converted a caving hobby to a career path. She specialises in how caves form in relatively “young” limestone (i.e less than 65 Ma) and the landscape that has evolved around them. She has been a member of VSA for several decades and is the Chair of the ASF Helictite Commission.
